Hi friends! It’s Amber here and I’m so excited to be on the Crate Paper blog today sharing a fun Valentine’s Day craft. The sweetest month of the year is upon us and I think you will definitely have all the heart eyes for this project. It’s super simple and oh so sweet!
I’ve always loved Valentine’s Day because it was an excuse to pass out love notes and of course candy to one another. I remember as a child in Elementary School we decorated brown paper bags with doilies, pink and red hearts, and other paper scraps. Then we all went around and passed out treats to each other, dropping goodies into each other’s bags.
I also remember participating in a “warm and fuzzy” bulletin board where we could write kind notes to each other. It really did give my heart all the warm and fuzzies reading notes write specially for me. Talk about the sweetest feeling ever!
I guess that’s why it was only fitting that the new “Sweet Story” collection by Maggie Holmes worked perfectly with my craft idea for this Valentine’s Day! It’s full of all the dreamy colors, darling icons, and even some lovey-dovey sentiments.
As an adult, I really try to keep the butterflies-in-my-stomach kind of magic alive on Valentine’s Day - in a simple way. Life is messy and it’s certainly not all rainbows and sunshine every day. But this is one of the days where my fiancé and I try to be intentional about making it a little extra special.
Something that really touches my heart is reading love notes. My fiancé Juan and I are high school sweethearts, so we have definitely passed many love notes back and forth to each other, especially in those early months and years of being lovestruck high school students. I let that be my inspiration for my Valentine’s Day craft this year.
I decided to make a banner of love notes to display in our home throughout the month of February. It would be filled with sweet cards dangling by clothespins waiting to be written on. The idea is that throughout the days leading up to Valentine’s Day, you can write love notes to each other and hang them back up on the line for the other to see. Then on Valentine’s Day, you can read them aloud to each other!
To bring this love note banner to life, I simply gathered some twine and two small command strip hooks. I tied a small knot on each end of the twine strand so they would sit nicely in and anchor in the hooks. Then I took the two cut-apart papers from the “Sweet Story” collection and cut apart the phrase cards and shapes!
After I had cut apart everything, I chose several cards that had either sweet phrases or room for handwriting. I did embellish a few cards to add dimension and extra special detail. There were two tag pieces that I threaded yellow ribbon through to add cute bows. For the cards that had room for handwriting, I used my dotted line tape runner to create lines for writing on. As for the finishing touch on each card, I rounded the corners using the feature on my envelope punch board.
Once all of the love note cards were complete, I strung them up on the twine using white clothespins that I got from Michael’s. And that’s it, my friends! The banner was then totally complete and ready for all the lovely notes. It’s definitely a creative, but simple take on a lovey-dovey tradition that never ceases to give you those butterflies and heart eyes.
I truly believe that if you love or care about someone, it’s important to take the time to express it with your words and actions. Our words have the power to inspire, encourage, comfort, and strengthen other people. Why not try something cute, romantic, and a little crafty to tell your other half how much they mean to you? Maybe it’ll be something you can carry on even past Valentine’s Day to intentionally love on each other with your words to keep the spark and butterflies alive.
Even if you don’t have a romantic partner, this love note banner concept can be used to love on anyone you care for - children, friends, or even as “encouragement” or “appreciation” for coworkers in the workplace. Everyone wants to feel that warm and fuzzy feeling you get from reading a handwritten note. This is the perfect way to do just that! I hope you feel inspired by this craft and I’d love to see how you use it. What are your Valentine’s Day traditions or plans?
