Okay friends, I think we can all agree that receiving a card is such a great feeling, am I right!? I can’t be the only one that gets excited to see a letter in my mailbox or sitting on my desk with actual handwriting on the front. I love getting cards! It’s a simple, yet meaningful way to let someone know you care about them. It really does bring on all the warm and fuzzies! You never know when someone might need a simple act or word of kindness to get them through the day. It could change everything. What a beautiful thing to know our words and actions can have such a strong impact on those around us.
One of my goals for the year is to love others well, and I believe cardmaking can be one of many ways to do it. And the fact that I get to craft is the biggest cherry on top! Today I’ll be sharing a creative card idea that’s perfect for any occasion. It’s a new year so maybe you want to send some encouragement to a friend who needs motivation to stay focused on their goals. Or maybe you want to make something special for a loved one since Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Whatever it is, I think you will love this card idea!
In general, I love interactive elements when it comes to all my scrapbooking projects. It’s a creative challenge and fun to learn new techniques. And with it being a new year, I wanted to try something new and different. I had remembered seeing a waterfall pull-tab card on Pinterest in the past and decided to try my hand at it!
I began by trimming my card to the desired shape. With a pencil, I then traced a rectangle about 1-1.5 cm inside the edges of my card base. Using my paper trimmer, I cut along the top, bottom, and left edges of my traced rectangle. I scored the right edge of the traced rectangle, so it created a flap.
On the backside of that flap, I score two lines vertically, about 2 cm apart, which created three scored columns. I folded the flap along each score edge. I then trimmed 3 different sized pieces of patterned paper and adhered them to each scored column. This made them overlap.
I also created my “pull-tab” that I secured with clear tape to the backside of the card. Then I adhered another piece of patterned paper to the back of the entire card that matched the size of my base paper. I kept the right edge un-adhered so I could pull the pull-tab through. I hope to make a process video for this technique in the future!
Once my waterfall pull-tab card was complete, I began embellishing. I used scraps I had left from the Sunny Days and Heritage collections by Maggie Holmes because they really were my favorite collections of 2019. They’re bright, vibrant, colorful, and perfect for creating a card that can be used for everyday encouragement or even for a sweeter occasion like Valentine’s Day.
It was such a fun technique to try and I hope you feel inspired to try it as well. Nothing says kindness like an interactive handmade card!
