I love making cards because there are so many techniques and possibilities you can use to make it special. When I found out our challenge was to create interactive cards, I wanted to do something fun and creative.
Now there’s nothing quite as fun as a festive birthday card. So I decided to try and create one using an interactive technique. There wasn’t a more perfect collection to use than Hooray by Crate Paper!
This collection was released last year and it instantly became a favorite of mine. I am obsessed with bright colors, and boy does this collection shine through with all the gorgeous colors! It’s perfect to use for all the birthday celebrations that come up throughout the year.
My favorite paper from this collection is the Birthday Girl paper, particularly the side with the rainbow stripes on the bottom. I decided to make this paper the cover of my card.
Hooray also boasts fun icons like llamas, bears, and other party animals! Not to mention balloons, tags, cakes, stars, fun phrases, and more. You can really do a lot with this collection.
I really wanted to make this card unique from other cards I’ve made in the past. So, I went ahead and created an accordion style card! This kind of card can be expanded to reveal several sections, on both sides!
To do this, I gathered some different patterned papers from the collection and trimmed my first 4 pages down to 9 inches long by 5 inches tall. I then scored each page down the middle, at 4.5 inches, and folded the paper in half.
For the cover page only - I kept the paper folded in half, and did a second score line along the open side of the folded paper, just 0.5 inches in. I folded along the score line.
For my next three pages - I did the same thing, except I did my second score line at 0.5 inches in on the closed side of the folded paper, not the open side. This way, when I arranged them to connect together, the open side of one page would fit over the scored closed edge of the paper before it.
The cover page needed to be done opposite so the page would have a closed edge on the outer side.
For my fifth page, since it was last, I only needed to trim it down to 8 inches long by 5 inches tall. I folded it in half just like the others, but at the 4 inch mark. And then I adhered the open edge to the scored edge of the page before it. This made it so the last page had a closed edge like the front page.
Since each page was folded in half, I decided to create pockets to tuck in little things like gift cards, money, ephemera, pictures, etc. That can definitely add a super fun touch to a handmade card.
To do this, just add some adhesive to the bottom edge of your paper before folding it in half. This will make it so the top of each page is open for you to stick things inside, while the bottom is closed so nothing falls through.
I do plan on making a process video to demonstrate this technique in the future!
After the body of the card was complete, it was time to start embellishing! Since it’s a birthday card, I wanted to keep things on the simpler side so there’s room for writing special words.
One of my favorite pages is the one with the llama and pom-poms. I added the “Get Your Party On!” puffy sticker speech balloon so it looks like he’s talking. Super fun!
I also love the page with the chipboard balloon cluster! Again, I just love all the colors.
For my cover, I layered some patterned papers and added dimension by using some foam squares. I then added the “Make A BIG Wish” chipboard sticker layered on top of a chipboard cake stand. To top it off, I added a couple stars, and some silver glitter washi tape to the edge.
I love how this card turned out! The interactive elements make it unique and special. It was also a great challenge for me to use a different technique and try something new. I hope you’re inspired to give it a try and share your card with someone special!
