Hi friends! It’s Amber here on the Crate Paper blog today, and I’m so excited to be sharing my first project using the new Sunny Days collection by Maggie Holmes. I never cease to be amazed by each new collection released, but Sunny Days is my absolute favorite! I’m just blown away by all the pretty colors, gorgeous icons, and the new product items!
One of the new product items from this collection is the stencil pack. There are two different patterns and to accompany them are three gorgeous acrylic paint colors! I was really inspired by the paint and stencils and decided that I wanted to create something on canvas so I could put them to work.
I got a 10x10 canvas and let my creativity run wild. Basically, I ended up styling a fun scrapbook layout on it, and I’m obsessed with how cute it turned out.
I decided to use that pretty pink colored paint and stenciled one of the designs onto the center of the canvas. When painting on your stencil design, be sure to use a good round paint brush with a dabbing motion rather than a stroke motion. Make sure to let the paint dry and clean off your stencil before starting on the next section of the design. This way you wont smear any part of the design.
Once my paint was dry, I chose some patterned paper I wanted to use on the canvas layout. I thought about stenciling my entire canvas, but I decided against it because I just couldn’t resist diving into all the pretty papers! There are so many lovely and fun papers in this collection, it is truly incredible. Two of my favorites were the Apple Blossom and Care Free papers. The florals on the Apple Blossom paper are to die for! Plus, my favorite color is yellow, so it’s pretty much the most perfect paper ever.
I trimmed four strips of each paper. Then I layered each yellow floral strip on top of a striped strip using adhesive tape. I kept most of the yellow floral paper showing, but I love the touch of pink and blue stripe from the bottom paper layer.
I then secured each strip down to each side of the canvas, creating almost a window type effect with my pink stencil design peeking through the center. It’s definitely an interesting style, but I love how it looks!
Then came my favorite part – the embellishing! Sunny Days has so many fun embellishments to choose from. Ephemera, acetate pieces, chipboard, stickers, paper flowers, bows, charms, rhinestones, and all of it is beautiful. It was so much fun digging into it all and styling this layout.
I started by pulling out all the ephemera pieces I thought would go nicely with the layout. As I went along in the creation process, I found myself giving it somewhat of a mood board style with fun pieces and phrases layered and scattered around the canvas.
I layered a few ephemera pieces to the left bottom corner including a “composition” notecard, a teal floral tag, and a pretty “sunshine” piece. Next to it, I stuck down that adorable pink bicycle with peaches in the basket. Every little detail and element of this collection is just wonderful. I also adhered one of the paper flowers along with a charm!
To the top right corner, I decided to create a floral cluster! Florals are my absolute favorite, and Maggie Holmes never disappoints. I layered two chipboard flowers as well as another paper flower.
Meanwhile, to the left top corner, I trimmed down the “falling in love with this place” card a bit to make it fit better in that space. I created another chipboard cluster using the floral crown girl who might be my favorite piece from this collection. The peach, heart, and little flower added extra dimension and detail. Once all the chipboard pieces were adhered together, I layered the cluster partially on top of the ephemera card. I then popped it all up on some foam squares!
I know I’ve said “favorite” so many times in this post already, but one of my favorite components of this canvas layout if the gold clip! I used sticky dots to secure it down directly onto the canvas, and it looks amazing! It’s such a fun interactive element, and really contributes to the mood board style of the layout. To add even more flair, I stuck down one of the striped bows onto the clip.
I decided to clip on the real-photo ephemera piece that says “when you stop and look around, life is pretty amazing.” That phrase is so beautiful, and it went perfectly with the theme of this layout.
To the bottom right corner of the layout, I used sticky dots to adhere the “sunshine on my mind” ephemera piece. Then I stuck down a couple chipboard phrases as well.
After that, my canvas layout was complete! This has been one of my ultimate favorite projects I’ve ever made. I love that I was able to incorporate so many of the new products from the collection. I also enjoyed putting a twist on a traditional scrapbook layout concept and turning it into something different. Take a look at my process video to see it all come to life!
I can’t wait to display this canvas in my new craft room in my new house. Yep, the great thing about canvas art is that they’re easy to display as décor in your home! I hope you’re inspired by this project and by this gorgeous new collection. Sunny Days is sure to make your projects so much brighter!
