Altered Objects Week

Hi everyone! This week here on the Crate Paper blog, we are showcasing altered projects. Today I am going to show you how I made this altered piece for my daughter's room, using the new Wonder collection.

I started with this plain wood "K" that I picked up at Target. I knew I wanted to cover it with patterned paper, so I chose a neutral pattern from the collection. I also gathered up some Mod Podge and a brush.

I painted a thin coat of Mod Podge on the letter, using the brush.

I then placed the wood piece face down on the reverse side of the patterned paper. I let the glue dry for just a few minutes, then used an X-acto knife to trim the edges of the paper.

After all the paper was trimmed off, I used a nail file to sand the edges down a bit.

Once I made sure all the paper was smooth over the piece, I wanted to add a bit of embellishment. I used these gold glitter circle stickers from the Wonder collection to create a polka dot pattern on the letter. On the stickers that were over the edge, I used scissors to trim them off.

And here's a look at the finished product! I layered up some chipboard, tags, felt and stickers to complete the piece. I also added a yellow tassel at the top of the tag for some texture. My daughter loves it! She immediately took it into her room and put it up on her bookshelf.

Wonder Week: A Layout by Marcy

I have been looking forward to the new Wonder collection ever since I first saw it. I don't have any small kids, but the colors and designs were just too perfect! I knew I'd easily use this collection for all my everyday projects. First up...using that super cute cat paper! Totally not hard for me with this family! Because this paper is quite bold I decided to use it on the opposite side of my photo. I trimmed a piece that almost took up a quarter of my page.

Besides that I cut two more pieces... each smaller than the next to create a wonky grid on the top portion of my page. You'll be seeing a lot of that diamond paper on future projects from me I'm sure! 

Once I was happy with those three larger pieces of paper I glued them down and started to play around with embellishments. Really, this just means taking cute things out of their package and moving them around on the page.

Before long I decided to run a column of embellishments down the right side of my page.

I added the "Special for Today" die-cut for a title and then added another die-cut and a portion of the glitter square stickers below that. Small strips of patterned papers at the bottom of the page ground the entire layout.

The large portion of cat paper looked a little lonely so I layered in a shipping tag for some more journaling.

I'm not confident in my stamping so I used the self-inking "hello" stamp to stamp on a scrap piece of paper. This would let me trim it out and adhere it to my tag instead of goofing up and having to toss a tag. Good thing too... because it took me three tries to get it right.

To finish the page I added my journaling and a LOT of stitching.

I'm loving how versatile this collection is! And that cat paper? Yah... I think I'll need a few more sheets.

Wonder Week: A Pretty Piece of Home Decor

Hello!

Today I am pleased to present you the cute wood veneer frame from

the WONDER collection.

 

I find it very cute to decorate a child's room, his studio or even your living room.

 

 

To start this house, I selected background papers and embellishments that I wanted to use. It was difficult to make a choice among all the die-cut and chipboard!

I pasted papers on some parts of the house but I decided to leave voids to provide a refined side to my home decor.

 

 

I added lace and the word HELLO found in the pack ephemera.

 

 

 

Here are the details once I the added embellishments.

 

 

The small chipboard birds are too cute.

Flowers provided the perfect finishing touch!

 

 

 

Here it is in my living room!

 

 

But I find that the house also makes great hanging on a white wall.

Wonder Week: Altered Frame

I love creating with the new Wonder collection from Crate Paper.  I am always inspired to create something for "baby", as the darling images and phrases, seem so fitting for a little one.  Today I've altered a frame that's been floating around my house, and dressed it up to fit perfectly in "baby's" room.

I first chose paper to create my background and from where I could build my focal point.  I wanted something a bit darker than the frame so that it would be stand out from the white border.  Next I added a die cut Bingo card from the Ephemera pack, and adhered it to the center of my frame.

I then added a bit of trim around the opening of my frame, to soften the sharp edges a bit, and added Wonder chipboard flowers and garland near the top, and a chipboard heart and flower in the bottom corner.

I have been waiting patiently to use one of the darling die-cut animals from the ephemera pack, and chose my favorite one to place in the center of my frame, followed by a sentiment and small velvet flower.

Creating altered frames for special occasions is one of my most favorite DIY projects.  They come together so quickly and make a special event, or person, even more special :).

Wonder Week: Wood Veneer Frame

Hello and welcome to Wonder Week on the Crate Paper blog! All this week, our design team is sharing layouts created with our new collection. Up first is Jennifer Chapin with this darling layout using the house wood veneer frame.

Hey everyone! Jennifer here, and today I am sharing this layout with you that I created with the new Wonder collection. This wood veneer house frame is so great and I wanted to make it the centerpiece of my layout. I used many different patterned papers and embellishments from the collection to complete it, I will show you how!

I started with a piece of white cardstock as my background. I placed the house where I wanted it, then used that as a guide to add part of my title. For the title, I used a combination of Thickers and printed word strips.

I used wet adhesive to adhere the house to a piece of patterned paper and carefully trimmed the edges. After that, I used my ruler to measure the openings and added other patterned paper and embellishments.

I printed some family photos to size, and added those too. The saying that I used for the title has always been my favorite. I might actually end up framing this layout and hanging it up somewhere in the house!

I finished the layout off with stickers and ephemera from the collection, as well as one of the large wood veneer words. I hope you can get your hands on this line and start creating soon! The colors are so fabulous and the graphics in this collection are so great for any type of family project.

Back-to-School Week: Journey Clipboard

I love office supplies and always get a little giddy this time of year as it's time for school to begin again, and time to stock up on school and office supplies.  Clipboards are a favorite of mine and lately, chalkboard paint :).  I decided to spray my mini clipboard with a bit of this paint and see what would happen, and I have to say, I love the results.

The Crate Paper Journey collection is filled with inspiring quotes and phrases, so I knew it would be a perfect fit for my back to school clipboard.  I used chipboard and die cuts around the outside of my clipboard, leaving the inside empty for messages or reminders.

I clipped a foiled tag and die cut together using a glittered clothespin from the Craft Market collection, and just have it sitting on top of the clipboard, as a gentle reminder for my little student.

I used a few tiny Puffy Icon Stars here and there to help create movement and personality.

Back-to-School Week: Squares Layout

Today, design team member Jennifer Chapin is sharing a back to school layout featuring the new Wonder collection. Let's take a look!

 

 

 

Hi everyone! Jennifer here, and I had so much fun using the new Wonder collection to create this back to school themed layout for my daughter. The collection really has so many great sayings that apply to back to school, you can see I have used the "be brave" and "let your light shine" stickers. I stuck with a grid design for this layout, leaving some white space for embellishments.

 

 

 

 For the title, I used the multi-patterned chipboard Thickers that come with this collection - aren't they fabulous? They are nice and big too. I adhered them to patterned vellum and stitched through after adding to the layout. Originally, this was going to be a pocket page but I found I liked it better as an actual layout.

 

 

The cork numbers in this collection were perfect to add an accent to the page to show that my daughter is going to be in first grade. I also used a chipboard frame and star next to the title to add some dimension and color.

 

 

The 'be brave' chipboard sticker was perfect for a back to school page. Even though my daughter loves school, she still gets a little nervous for the first day. I also embellished with some chipboard hearts and an ampersand from the ephemera pack.

Back-to-School Week: Maria

 

Back to School time has always been so exciting for me, even after I graduated.  As an adult, I still can't help but get a little giddy knowing that fall is just around the corner.  Besides being my favorite fashion season, the stationary world is filled with gorgeous planners, calendars, and pretty paper.  

The Wonder Collection may just be my all time favorite Crate Paper offering.  I've been taking it way beyond scrapbooking and it’s made it’s way onto my desk— I absolutely love incorporating elements of the collection into my planner.  Today, I want to share a fun little organizer I made to house some of these supplies and keep them handy as I work.

 

 

  

For step by step directions, you can view the tutorial here.  I was surprised how little I needed to put together an accordion fold organizer.  All I used was 2 thick pieces of cardboard (I recycled some packaging), 2 pieces of patterned paper (I chose the Wild Spirit from the Wonder Collection), 6 sheets of solid cardstock, and adhesive (the AC This to That 1/4” adhesive is perfect for this project). 

 

 

 

As a finishing touch, I added tassels from the Wonder Collection using a bit of tulle ribbon. I'm so happy with how my organizer turned out and I'm going to love seeing it on my desk every day.  It’s going to be really great having all my beautiful Crate Paper supplies handy as I work on my planner!

Back-to-School Week

Hello everyone!

 

It's back-to-school time soon and I realized that I hadn't scrapped the pictures of Lisa from last September.

The Wonder collection is timely and is perfect for showcasing back-to-school moments.

You know what else? It's also ideal for autumn photography!

 

 

I created a mini album to capture Lisa's return to school!

All of the pages and photos are connected with a ring and a nice yellow tassel.

I fell in love with the Trinket Thickers, so I knew they'd need to go on the cover. I wanted them to stand out, so I chose white for the cover.

 

 

For the first double page, I chose to place a big title with Charm Thickers. I stitched over them using a sewing machine and I then placed a cute, mint rabbit sticker.

Around the photo, there are die-cuts from the ephemera pack.

 

 

 

I wrote my journaling on the computer and I cut each little phrase.

To add some color to this double-page, I adorned with a die-cut sentence.

 

 

 

I loved all the little creatures in this collection, especially the rabbits and cats!
Lisa adored watching me create her album.

 

 

 

Next, I chose to use the 3 cardstock houses to represent a school.
 (They are found in the 12x12 sheet)

 

 

 

 

To diversify the embellishments, I cut labels from the BRAVE paper and a tag in the foiled cardstock.
