All About Girls Week! + Quilt-Inspired Layouts by Katie Ehmann

My sewing thus far has been nearly limited to paper, except for my daughters' yearly birthday shirts on which I sew hand-cut fabric numbers, and one botched "easiest pillow cover in the world" pattern. However, I'm completely in love with quilts. I'm permanently borrowing a vintage patchwork from my mom, and I love perusing Pinterest and Etsy in search of Quilt Patterns. One day I may create an actual quilt of my own, but until then, I've gathered tons of ideas for scrapbook pages from my coveted quilt patterns. And since my affection for patterned paper is one of the main reasons I scrapbook, I truly enjoy recreating quilted looks on my projects. For my girl-inspired layouts this month, I found two quilts on Pinterest from which I drew inspiration. The first is quite unique, and uses different sized circles in a fairly random arrangement.

Here is my completed layout.

 To start, I grabbed three circle punches: a 2" circle, a 1" circle, and a cofetti punch. I chose a few different patterned papers from the Oh Darling collection, and went to to town punching. Like the quilt pattern, I adhered the circles in a random arrangement, taking care to separate similar patterns and colors to create an eclectic look.

For embellishments, I chose items from Maggie Holmes' Styleboard collection. I think the colors work beautifully with Oh Darling, and the circles and hearts complemented my pattern. I chose a simple title and single, but gorgeous photo of my youngest daughter so that the quilt-like pattern took center stage. Finally, I trimmed a quarter inch from the perimeter of my cardstock and adhered it to a contrasting piece of patterned paper. Machine stitching completed my project.

My second inspiration quilt is also very unique, and was the ultimate partner to the layered banner stickers in Styleboard.

I was immediately drawn to the bright, happy pattern on this quilt. I chose various papers from Styleboard, and trimmed them into banner shapes. At first, I arranged the banners exactly as the quilt pattern, but then decided to group them together under my photo for more impact. I sewed them down across a sheet of white cardstock, and then sewed the gold striped washi with a few gathers for dimension across the top. The colors in my photo didn't work with the papers I'd chosen, so I printed my photo in black and white.

For my title work, I used gold label stickers. I love how the type is raised, just as if they were created from an old label maker! I selected one dimensional banner sticker to place right under my photo, and then added other banner stickers and chipboard to create a cluster in the center of my project. Finally, I balanced my page by adding a couple of tiny strips along the top left corner.
