Love You: Saying "I Love You" to Family - Jeanette Lee

It's the CP Gal's last chance to show off a little love as we finish up "Love You" week here at Crate Paper. Sharing the "Love You" message doesn't have to lack creativity, at least not with Crate's Valentine's Day collection, Love Notes! This sweet, endearing card set and family album from Jeanette Lee are a superb example of "Love" re-imagined in decorative form to be shared on Valentine's Day...

To love and to show love can sometimes be difficult, especially in a family. I find it easier to express how much I love a person if he is a lover or a special friend, but when it comes to words of affection towards my family, I struggle. Not that I don't love them, but perhaps the traditional society I live in has made social-cultural norms uncomfortable. With that said, I try to show the extent of my love by focusing on doing little projects around the house as a form of expressing how much I love them. With Valentine's Day approaching, it proved to be a perfect opportunity to create another project - solely for them! 

I started off by making envelopes to contain love notes for each family member. I found a used jewelry stand and converted it into a letter holder. This would serve to fit close to seven letters in the upper and lower compartments.

Using patterned papers from the Love Notes 6 x 6 pad, I sized it down to a 5.5" inch square. I scored two diagonal sides to 2" while the other two sides were scored to 2.5". Attached is a sample drawing for easy reference.

Then, I cut the ends that intersected with the score lines. Lastly, I folded and assembled the envelope. To create a more authentic look, I rounded the corners with a punch.

To decorate the envelopes further, I mixed a variety of textural elements together (vellum, chipboard, etc.) while ensuring that some of them be placed with the intention of creating bulk and depth. Layering matters! I ended my decorative process by personalizing the envelopes to the person intended to receive them. Keeping a person in mind as you scrapbook can definitely make the process that much more enjoyable!

Up next, I created an album, focusing on the special moments and memories we shared as a family in 2013.

So, how is this different from a normal album? For starters, both ends of the album are decorated with a specific purpose/intention in mind, which I'll explain later on. To assemble the album, I cut down eight cardstock sheets to 4.5" x 4". Vertically, along the left edge of each sheet, I scored a line at the .5" mark. I then glued the sides together and assembled the album.

I placed tabs along the top edge of some of the album pages; highlighting a special family memory. These cute candy sticks from the Love Notes collection were perfect for the job! I covered the backside of the sticks with patterned papers as a final decorative touch, and to rid of the stickiness.

 

The other purpose I wanted to mention is that the album easily displays as a photo stand. As such, the pages may be readily seen from all angles. The tabs also serve to heighten the album while increasing it's presence from the outside.

While most of the album centers merely around full-page photographs, some of the space is devoted to smaller photographs. For example, on one of the pages I created an envelope and placed four photographs inside it that can easily be removed. As a means of decorating the opening further, I placed vellum and die cuts along the flap using a stapler to secure them.

This last page is special. A quote from Donna Hedges poignantly sums up the reasons as to why my family is important to me.

And there you have it, a completed arrangement of today's creations. I intend to place them in my living room on February 14th. It is a beautiful, heartfelt way to express how much I love my family.

The thought, matters. Start working on your Valentine's Day projects today. I'm sure that whatever you embark on will be timely reminders to your loved ones of your affection and I'm certain they'll be encouraged, and appreciative.

 

Love You: Hand Made Lavender Sachets - Marie Lottermoser

Do you remember making Valentines back in grade school? I've never outgrown the tradition. Every year, I hand make my own Valentines to send out to friends. There is nothing like discovering a pretty Valentine in your mailbox to brighten your day.

This year, instead of making traditional paper cards, I decided to go a step further and turn my Valentines into tiny presents. I used the patterned paper from the Love Notes collection to sew up lavender heart sachets. Friends can use them to scent linens, pillows and drawers, or just leave them out as a decoration. They smell divine!

All you need to make these are some dried lavender (or other fragrant spice), some pretty paper, and a needle and thread. I used a sewing machine, but you can just as easily hand sew them together.

Because my hearts are only 4" wide, I used a 6 x 6 paper pad so I could get a variety of patterned paper. I found it easiest to sew two paper hearts together about 3/4 of the way, and then fill the heart with lavendar before sewing it all the way shut. I left a 1/2" margin around the outside, and then used pinking shears to give the edges a finished look.

Take a pin and poke holes in the sachet to allow the fragrance to come through. I just traced around the edges of the stickers, but you can put the holes in any arrangement you wish.

I sewed hangers made of ribbon onto each sachet, and then decorated them with clothes pins, stickers and tags.

I was so happy with how these came out that I think I might make a set for myself. Are you making Valentines this year? If so, I highly recommend these fragrant little hearts.

Love You: Fourteen Years of "I Love You" - Ginny Hughes

Hi Everyone! I'm thrilled to be here with my first project on behalf of Crate Paper. I chose to create a layout as a way to say "I Love You" to my husband. Sometimes, I forget to document our relationship. It's hard to capture "us" when rarely do we take photos together. Still, I realize the value and importance of such photos. In creating the layout, I searched out a starting point using the oval shaped chipboard piece, "14". Last Fall, we celebrated our 14th anniversary and I thought it a perfect piece for the occasion!

This photo was taken upon our first trip together without the kids - just the two of us! It was a first in over ten years! We had a fabulous time, too!

I love using circles. I think they convey a feeling of happiness. On my layout, I used three different sized circles, all punched from Love Notes' 6 x 6 patterned paper pad. I like the decreased patterned paper prints; they're great when wanting to use small pieces on a project.

It's easy to create a lot of texture on a project just by using different types of materials. Here I combined regular patterned paper, vellum, chipboard, transparent hearts and thread from a sewing machine. I also curled my paper up a bit to make it pop off the page.

I think journaling is such an important part of a layout like this. It's doesn't have to be long - but from the heart. I used an old typewriter to journal about the trip we'd taken together. If without a typewriter, you could easily use a "typewriter" font as an alternative.

Love You: Valentine Kids Surprise! - Stephanie Bryan

Nothing says "I Love You" like a sweet little gift wrapped in a pretty box. For Valentine's Day this year, I'm surprising my two kids with these beautiful gift boxes filled with fun treats! I've wanted to start the tradition of using the same boxes each year, and as soon as I saw the "Love Notes" collection, I knew I could use the papers and embellishments to create gorgeous little boxes.

I picked up several cubed-sized white boxes at my local craft store and decided to decorate the tops. I started by trimming patterned paper to fit the top of each box. Then I added fun layers of tags, frames, stickers and clothespins. There really are no rules when it comes to layering. I like to begin with my flatter papers and stickers and then add the dimensional tags, chipboard and flair. By layering the elements in this way, you can add so much texture and interest to a project.

I filled each box with some shredded paper and a little gift. I kept the gifts rather simple: candy, a small toy and a Valentine's craft. It's not the gifts that say "I Love You", but the thought and meaning behind each box.

I can't wait to see my children's faces on Valentine's Day when they find these beautiful boxes on our table. And I'm looking forward to many more years of using these boxes to hold special "I Love You" gifts.

As we near Valentine's Day, we're taking time to call attention to Crate Paper's heart and arrow collection, Love Notes. This first week's theme is about telling that special someone how much you "love" him/her in a way that is crafty, heartfelt and perfectly sweet. From tidy boxed gifts to enveloped cards, the new CP Design Team has some great ideas for sharing the words "I Love You" using our very own, "Love Notes" collection. Today's "Love You" message includes a treat for that sweet tooth in your life and a matching card....

Valentine's Day is the perfect time to let those special people in your life know that you love them and treasure having them in your life. This special day does not have to be exclusive for a romantic type of love, but any love. Today, I've created a gift ensemble to gift to my dear sister.

I found her favorite candy treats while browsing a craft store and had to get them for her. She sure deserves to know she's loved by me. It's great having a sister and I want her to know that. So, I packaged up these sweet treats with some goodies from the Love Notes collection.

Using 12 x 12 patterned paper, I made my own gift box to hold the marshmallow treats. I bound it up with a patterned paper wrapped candy box.

I also made a card to give along with the candy. I used the 6 x 6 paper pad for the "Heart Throb" patterned paper layer. Next, I layered a journaling card from "Book of Love" to patterned paper and used decorative scalloped scissors for the border. I added chipboard die cuts and a stamped greeting. Last, I tucked in some ribbon to coordinate with the gift boxes.

To make the large gift box, I used a template system. I scored 2" around the entire border of 12 x 12 patterned paper sheets. I assembled the box base and box lid with double-sided sticky tape and added the candy contents. The polka dot paper is "Classic Love" from the collection.

To cover the candy box, I scored lines around the size of the box and wrapped it just as you would wrap a gift. I used a 12 x 12 sheet of "Heart Throb".

After adding the ribbon wrap, I placed an adhesive badge on the ribbon knot and used a chipboard die cut as a tag.

Most of the time, it's not what you give, but the fact that you thought about someone. I also think adding special gift wrapping lets the recipient know how much you love and appreciate them during this time of year. So, even if it's just candy, wrap it up with some "Love Notes" and make that special person feel loved.

2014 Crate Paper Design Team Reveal: Final Day

I final "hurrah" is in order for the brand-new 2014 Crate Paper Design Team! Today brings an end to the five-day CP Gal inauguration - we are enormously honored by their attendance and we look forward to boasting their paper crafting know-how in the upcoming months. I'm a thirty-three year old software engineer married to a full-time graduate student (and med school hopeful). We don't have kids, so my scrapbooks are filled with photos of our everyday (and not so everyday) adventures. We love to travel when our work and school schedules line up to allow it, and when we're at home we're always into something (the current project is DIY'ing a new kitchen from the floor up). I love documenting all of those things in my albums and having them to look back on. It's amazing how many things my scrapbooks remind me of that I would have otherwise forgotten!

Square photos. The change of aspect ratio after years of scrapping 4 x 6 and other rectangles is refreshing. In fact, I'm loving the different sizes of pages that are popping up in scrapbooking, too, especially 6 x 8!

Two-Page Layouts. Okay, so this isn't a trend, but I'm seeing more and more of them lately and I think we need to bring them back, baby!

Die Cutting. This one has been around a while, but I'm loving the new-ish trend of dies that coordinate with a paper line. They're a brilliant way to use up scraps and make your own inexpensive embellishments.

I'm Jina Jean. I live in Seoul, South Korea with my family. I'm 37, but I'm still single. Melissa was born and raised in American Fork, UT. After graduating from Brigham Young University, she and her husband moved to Southern Nevada where they currently live with their little girl. After the birth of her daughter, Melissa wanted to make handmade Thank You notes to send out and became hooked immediately on card making. It all spiraled from there and has become a wonderful and rewarding part of Melissa's life.

Vellum in any color and shape; pockets, die cuts, envelopes, layered accents, etc. I love the softness and dreamy feel vellum lends and the ease with which it is to work with.

I also love the worn, weathered, aged and distressed trend. The shabbier the better :). With this trend comes the feeling that everything has a story, something weathered and aged, shows signs of being loved and cherished, and that it grows more beautiful with age.

And lately, sequins! What took us so long to rediscover them and start using them on our paper-crafts? They are the perfect finishing touch and filler.

Six years ago, I went through a life changing event that brought with it the title, 'Young Widow'.  Through the experience, documenting 'life' became my mission. In learning the temporary nature which had been professed to me time and time again, I came to realize how quickly memories are made and forgotten, and how only a few ever really survive to be told and celebrated later on. A year into my widowhood journey, I met the marvelous Lisa, founder of Crate Paper. I took a chance with a brand I love upon invitation and never looked back. Today, some five years later, Crate Paper is as much a part of my passion as scrapbooking itself. I lead an awesome team of designers and carry on the tradition of Crate Paper at it's finest! Hi! I'm Megan Klauer from Aledo, IL and I'm thrilled to be back with the Crate Paper team for another year! I'm married to Aaron and we have three kiddos: Coe (11), Chase (9), and Ella Mae (3). We live on a small farm where we hunt, raise cattle and chickens, and enjoy watching our little ones play. We are an outdoors kind of family so you'll find many of those everyday moments in my scrapbook pages. I strive to incorporate journaling onto each of my layouts and enjoy focusing on the title work portion of my designs.

Hi! I'm Stephanie Buice (sounds like Bice since I get asked lots). I live in AL with my husband Bryan. We have an almost two year old son named Brade. I've been scrapping since 2001, but really have crafted in one way or another my entire life. I serve on two other design teams and absolutely LOVE it! Crafting is what keeps me sane and brings me so much joy. I guess you could describe my style as clean and classic. I adore Crate Paper and still can't believe that I get this opportunity!

I love the mixed media trend, although I really have no idea what I'm doing when working with multiple mediums - I enjoy splashing ink and paint around on my pages.

Sewing on layouts - I think my sewing machine may go into shock if I ever try and pass fabric through it.

I love the minimalistic clean page trend. To me, it's so classic.

2014 Crate Paper Design Team Reveal: Day Three

My name is Adrienne Alvis and I'm a married, Mid-Western, mother of three who loves paper crafting and everything that is involved with it. I started scrapbooking in 2006 when my youngest son was born and was hooked instantly! I love trying new techniques and using lots of colors, layers and embellishments on my layouts. Other than scrapbooking, I love to hang out with my family and friends, work on my photography skills, run, and scroll through my Instagram feed. For me, the best part of this hobby is documenting my family's everyday activities and life events and getting the chance to meet and work with so many amazing people.

My three favorite scrapbook trends are using watercolors and mists, using vellum, and using anything on my projects that's gold.

I'm thrilled to be back for my third term as a CP Girl! I've enjoyed working with all the collections from the last two years, challenging myself to make new and different projects every month, and most of all, being so inspired by the rest of the ladies on this always - talented team. My favorite things to make are cards and tags, and in the last year or so, I've also become a little obsessed with clever and beautiful packaging. Sometimes I prefer a vintage look with lots of layered details; other times I'm happy to leave a project simple and sparse. When I'm not working away in my little studio, I have an amazing husband, 3-year-old son, and a baby girl who keeps me pretty busy. We live in sunny Southern California, but I'm a New Yorker at heart (small town; not the city!). I'm looking forward to another fantastic year here at Crate Paper.

My name is Wida Miller and I'm a mom of four, nurse practitioner and generally a glass is half full kind of gal. I have been blogging for two years, card making for five and scrapbooking for ten. My three favorite trends are twine that dangles like you just don't care, but it's so intentional, splatter, particularly if it's gold, and sequins.

My name is Naomi Atkins, and I'm very excited to be on the Crate Design Team again this year. I really love anything vintage, and that love/style is reflected in my photography business, Inspired & Enchanted Photography. I'm the wife of a deer farmer, and a happy mama of five busy children ranging in age from two to fourteen. I have been in love with scrapbooking for over ten years now! I enjoy designing on a few teams, and had a few covers last year for Scrapbook Trends magazine. I love being a mom, being crafty, and traveling (although I've done very little with five kids!). My oldest daughter and I are going on a mission trip to Zimbabwe, Africa in June and we are working in an orphanage and I'm donating photography for the American Foundation for Children with Aids. We are very excited for this!

You will often see large photos in my layouts and I like to express my emotions and style in my photography.

I love anything gold and silver, anything that involves text (handwritten or vintage text) and I'm a fan of clean lines with bright pops of color here and there.

2014 Crate Paper Design Team Reveal: Day Two

Welcome back! We will be devoting the week to the introduction of the 2014 CP Design Team. Today marks the second day of the exciting announcement! Help us welcome these talented individuals to the team - they're bound to do great things!

Hi! I'm Jill Sprott, and I'm absolutely thrilled to be joining the Crate Paper team! My photo may not exactly scream 'local girl', but don't let the long hair and blue eyes fool you: I was born and raised on Oahu, Hawai'i, where I live with my husband, daughter and three furchildren. By day, I'm an English teacher, a profession that is, like scrapbooking, a colorful, creative and rewarding endeavor. When the weekend rolls around, my focus shifts from students' papers to patterned paper. I have been scrapbooking for over a decade now, and I show no signs of falling out of love with it. Why is that? When trying to explain why I scrapbook, I always quote Robert Frost, who claimed that poetry is "a way of remembering what it would impoverish us to forget." That also defines scrapbooking for me. To be able to share my passion for this incredible hobby as a member of the Crate Paper team is a true honor.

Storytelling. I've noticed a renewed emphasis on scrapbooking as storytelling. The words on the page matter! 

Green. It's been a good year for green in the scrapbooking world, and since it is my favorite color, I definitely approve. 

Layers. Long live layering!

Hi! I'm Anabelle O'Malley! I live in Delaware with my husband and our ten year old son, Ryan along with our orange tabby, Pulu. I've been paper crafting for the past nine years and have loved every minute of it. It truly is my creative outlet. As a child, I would spend hours drawing and making cards for people, so this is just a natural extension of my love for all things paper. Along with creating layouts, I still love card making and trying out new techniques. My creations contain lots of texture and details, layering and clustering. I love mixing colors and patterns! Hello, I'm Jeanette Lee. I was born and raised in Singapore. I'm a teacher by profession and in my spare time, I can spend hours relaxing in front of my television. I'm a huge TV addict, I must say! My scrapbooking adventure started in November 2008. I would easily describe my scrapbooking style as soft, clean and streamlined. I love to scrap about my everyday life, those whom I love and life events. Journaling on my layouts is a must and I'm always finding creative ways to do so, in order that they are recorded for keepsake. I love all things vintage and have been a collector of such things to decorate my own scrapbooking room. What a joy it is, to have a space like that!

I'm looking forward to another fabulous term with Crate paper and I can't wait to get started!

Typography. I love how it adds a huge statement on your layout background or titles, with different letterings and font sizes. It can be easily personalized through your own handwriting or the die cutting machine too!

Gold. I love how this has become my 'go to' color. A little tinge of gold can add spice, glam and glitz to any project I am embarking on.

Floral prints. It is such a great way to mix these bold prints with neutral colors, for a nice contrasting background. They can be such a great help in the fussy cutting and layering department too. One can't go wrong with flowery patterns and floral elements on a page.

Corrie lives with her husband and three active daughters in the 'burbs of Atlanta' where she spends a considerable amount of time playing a taxi driver and trying to stay cool in the heat. She has been scrapbooking since 2009 and has found that it provides her with a creative and artistic outlet that helps to keep her sane even in the chaotic craziness of life. Beside scrapbooking, Corrie enjoys photographing her kids, reading on the beach, looking at magazines, drinking coffee, eating sushi with friends and encouraging kids to run faster and to score a goal. Corrie can be found hanging out on her blog, You, Me & Crazy.

Mixed Media! I love paints and paste and mists and stamps and paper and bits. And I really love mixing them all together to see what happens.

Wood Veneer. These are some of the most fun elements out there. I love they they can be colored with paints, inks and mist for a custom look, but they can also be used straight out of the package and look amazing as well.

Layering. And it is not just about layering paper! I love building up a page from the blank background and seeing the dimension grow. Layers add so much visual interest to pages and I love that.

Her scrapbook designs have been published in various magazines, including Creating Keepsakes; Scrapbooks, Etc.; Scrapbook Trends; and the former Simple Scrapbooks. Hi Crate Paper Fans! I'm Katie Ehmann and I'm thrilled to be back for another year at Crate Paper! I live in Michigan with my awesome husband and two little girly girls. I'm a school social worker, soccer player, crafter, and hobby photographer.

My three favorite scrapbook trends are die-cut embellishments, mixing bold and colorful patterned papers and using foam adhesive to create dimension on a page.
