I hope all of you got your hands on the awesome collection, The Pier. I'm so in love with it, the colors and patterns are amazing. When I opened my box of Pier goods, in that first moment, I wondered how I could use the lovely Heatwave patterned paper and the large, gorgeous Carousel patterned paper.
I loved them both and wanted to use them in a fun, unexpected way!
So, follow me into my messy busy scrapbook room and I'll show you which process I chose to go about using the papers; modern, graphic backgrounds for two brand new layouts!
First up is the Heatwave {umbrellas} patterned paper...
In creating my own backgrounds, this first layout brings front and center, the beloved shape, hexagons.
To begin, I started by cutting an assortment of umbrellas from the paper. I randomly placed them on the layout to figure out the best location for each...
I then turned them upside down, moving them ever-so-slightly and sprayed them with yellow ink.
After gluing them down, I used my sewing machine to stitch over the tops of the umbrellas - most cater to just one line of stitching.
This is an up close look at the finished umbrella line-up!
Now, besides this simple design, I wanted to add some cool details: A Slide Frame filled with confetti!
I used one of the lace square die-cuts from the Ephemera Pack and topped it with vellum. I went back to the sewing machine and stitched around three of the die-cut's edges, leaving an opening at the top.
After filling it with confetti and gold sequins, I closed it with another line of stitching.
This was to be covered by one of the fabulous Slide Frames - I used 3D-Dot Adhesives underneath and then placed it on top my confetti sack, next the layout's photo.
Finally, I added a title and journaling, and framed the layout with patterned paper.

The second layout is crafted from the chevron patterned paper, Carousel...
Again, a simple layout with a unique background, and a fun journaling spot and title.
First, I chose a favorite set of colored chevrons and cut them apart. I then placed them on a white background to create a graphic look.
To make sure the whole design was straight, I used my ruler as a sort of frame.
This too, went through my sewing machine.
Following the completion of the background, I worked on the titling and embellishments. I used the awesome Plastic Alphas and Numbers, and a Party Day Brad for added interest.
Lastly, I jotted down my journaling and placed a sticker in the top left corner.
Again, so easy to create and totally unique!
Here's one last look at both layouts...
As a quick enhancement to any layout, try these designs on your own. If you do, we'd love to see a link to your project'(s) in the comment section below. :)

Weekend Giveaway Winner!!
Last Friday, Janna Werner put out a question about journaling and which method of journaling you preferred; handwritten or computer generated. A random winner was chosen from the list of replies. Though, before we name the lucky crafter, first, a special thank-you to everyone that shared with us a personal glimpse into their journaling methodology. Handwritten journaling is very much treasured, though type appears to be just as popular..here's what our winner had to say about it:
Love the simplicity. I think even I can handle such a PL format.
I journal with my handwriting only. It's easier for me and adds a homespun touch.

I bought this paper for the chevron but ended up using the yellow side instead. Thank goodness I bought more than one sheet.
