Every now and then we have a guest designer that joins us whose creations are completely her own and are easily recognizable because they're frequently published and shared throughout the scrapbook community both online and via teaching venues. We're almost sure you're familiar with this person's most lovely creations and because of this, we feel very lucky to have her as today's guest designer! Katie Watson is an avid chipboard connoisseur and altered projects expert whom has a knack for mixing eclectic, altered vintage goods with everyday scrapbook supply items. Her creations are often heavily detailed and uniquely multi-dimensional as she combines and creates with an assortment of goodies, including paper, fabric, paint, glitter, flowers, ribbon, buttons and vast amounts of chipboard from Maya Road! As one of their lead designers, Katie's is routinely acquainted with chipboard..it's of no surprise then that of the three projects we're sharing of hers today, two of them are super cute, highly adored chipboard mini albums! We encourage you to take a peek at them...here's what happens when Crate Paper meets Maya Road and of course, sweet, talented Katie Watson:
About :: Katie Watson
Katie lives in San Diego with her husband, three children and two cats. She is a design team member for Maya Road, October Afternoon and The Scrapbook Gourmet. You can find her work in Scrapbook Trends and Simply Handmade, including their special edition issues.
Katie has been scrapbooking for seven years and has been crafting since she was a child. She teaches at her LSS and at scrapbooking events. Her work has been featured on her local news, QVC and a PBS scrapbooking show.
Crate Paper :: Questionnaire
When did you begin your creative journey with scrapbooking and how did you get started in the hobby?
I did my first album almost 11 years ago with markers, construction paper and some very tacky die-cuts, but I wasn't very inspired. I then got the bug to start scrapbooking almost 8 years ago after hearing about it from some friends. After a visit to the local scrapbook store, I was hooked!
If you were to describe your scrapbook style in five words or less, what would they be?
Shabby, vintage, happy, eclectic & distressed.
What inspires you to create? What are your primary sources of inspiration?
I mostly create mini albums and I get a ton of inspiration for them from Home Decor magazines. I love the Pottery Barn catalog, Martha Stewart Living, and Country Living for color inspiration purposes. I adore home decor and try to recreate different styles of home decor into my work (think cottage, lake house, antique, etc.)
Where do you do most of your scrapbooking? What time of day are you most creative?
I have a studio upstairs. I forced our family to eat at the coffee table for so many years (due to the dining room table being covered with crafty supplies) that my hubby had it on his priority list to make sure that our "forever" house had an extra room. I'm mostly creative in the morning right after my coffee. If I can get a few hours of silence then I'm able to get a ton done in the morning!
What is your current favorite scrapbooking technique and why? What scrapbook techniques have you enjoyed previously and of those, which do you still use?
My current favorite technique is chippy paint with layers of different colors underneath. I love the additional color spots and I love the authenticity it give to the whole shabby look.
I'm still a very simple girl. I own a paper trimmer, razor knife, scallop scissors, pinking shears, regular scissors and a few punches. That is about it as far as tools are concerned. I don't own a single die-cut system. I still cut circles using tracing templates. Silly, I guess..
What is your favorite Crate Paper scrapbook collection of all time?
The Season Collection!
Crate Paper Creations :: Mini Albums + Hanging Vase
The Paper Doll Collection :: Maya Road Oval Scallop Coaster Book
The Brook Collection {vase}
The Pink Plum Collection :: Maya Road Square Scroll Chipboard Coaster Book
A tremendous thank-you to Katie for guest designing on behalf of Crate Paper today! We LOVE it all, especially her last mini album - which is your favorite? Did you peek at the way she distressed and chipped away some of the paint from her last album? Oh my, this is a must try technique. We've never seen our Pink Plum look so shabby chic!
So, all the design team applications are in and we're reviewing them at this very moment! We're hoping to announce the new design team within a few shorts days..more than likely we're thinking right around Wednesday. If your one of the many that applied, mark your calendars!! This is where we'd usually mention our "Email Monday" post, but to no available surprise, it's technically not Monday. Because we have lots going on next week including a very special guest designer (we're keeping it a secret this time around, though we'll give you one tiny hint..just one - she designs for Maya Road & is the QUEEN of all things altered) who'll be joining us on Monday and of course, the announcement of our Crate Paper Design Team, which we've scheduled for next Wednesday, we're bringing you "Email Monday" a little early. Nearly everyday we receive submitted works from our blog readers. We're always beyond thrilled to see what you guys are up to with our CP goodies, so when we receive your emails, we immediately peek at them and file'em for posting. Some of the projects posted today have been patiently waiting to find there way here..they're now debuting on what we've renamed, "Email Friday"! It's the ol' switcheroo...yep, we couldn't hold onto these lovelies any longer without sharing them here. Here's what you've been sending us the last few weeks:
Dayna Howard must have heard about us being fans of all things layered!! We fell in love with her layouts as soon as we say them - they're perfectly playful and appropriately fit with that cute lil' guy of hers, don't you think?!
We love, love this layout from Annelie Maddock..she resides in the ever-so-scenic, beautiful country of New Zealand. She's found a delightful way to use our chipboard buttons to express her sons outward excitement for finger painting! Be sure to check out Annelie's blog as she's just posted another round of CP layouts (we especially like the first one!!)
Ohhh Lolly, you're crafty creations are pure perfection! This is the second printer drawer we've seen decorated with Brook and each one has been truly a treat to look at. They're always filled to brim with details..yours is no acceptation Lolly!
In response to catalyst #56 at Creative Therapy's blog, Jennifer Findlay created this subtle, exquisite layout utilizing pattern papers from one of Crate's most popular collections, Prudence..we still consider this collection to be one of our best!
Fashionably cute for school, Amanda Muirhead dresses up her sweet daughter in our Paper doll collection. She then transitions us to Nova Scotia where Brook and Season make themselves right at home..we're quite impressed! Love these Amanda!
And now before we leave you for the day, lets go ahead and announce the Pink Plum Collection Kit winner chosen from Wednesday's post! If this happens to be you, please email us with your shipping address at info@cratepaper.com - you've WON a Pink Plum Collection Pack! A huge Congrats!!
Wow - I really like The Color Room, thanks for letting us know about it. I really like how beautifully they present the challenges with the photograph and the sketch ~ very inspiring! And, you are right on that Pink Plum works perfectly for the current challenge! Posted by: Teresa Jaye | June 24, 2010 at 06:31 PM

We received a HUGE response to our ongoing design call!! We've spent the last few days reading and reviewing the many submissions that have come our way so far these last few days and let it be said, it won't be easy for us to decide who'll be joining CP as one of the lucky CP Girls! It's going to be an extremely tough decision, that's for sure..we're hoping to round up a list of design team names in the next week or two. The deadline for submitting to the call is this Sunday, June 27th, so if you're thinking about applying, you still have a fews days left to email us with your interest in being a part of the team. When applying, please send us links to your online gallery/blog (optional) or images of some of your favorite creations that best represents your current ongoing scrapbook style. You aren't required to submit works using our products either - we're simply interested in learning more about you as a scrapbooker and designer! Hopefully, this additional information answers some of the questions we've been seeing here in response to the call - we appreciate the questions and will keep you posted over the next week or so as we begin selecting the new CP Girls! Thanks to all who've applied thus far!! We can't wait to 'til next week!
Does this color palette remind you of something? How about our Pink Plum collection? It appears vaguely familiar, don't you think? Well, we spotted (thanks to one of our current blog contributors, Larissa Albernaz) the ever familiar color palette at a fresh, fashionable online challenge blog called the "The Color Room". It's a place of total inspiration as they post a new color palette and sketch each and every week to jump start one's creative process. Challenge participants have an opportunity to win prizes by simply sharing their work in "The Color Room's" online gallery. Not a challenge kind-of-gal? You don't have to participate the enjoy all the delightful bounties this place has to offer - there's enough eye candy to boot as they're online gallery and weekly tutorials are worth seeking just about any day of the week. We highly recommend check'en them out! They're now on our list of faves...tell us what you think of "The Color Room" to win a chance at owning our "Pink Plum" collection - we'll select a winner this Friday!
Again, it was our dear sweet Larissa that brought "The Color Room" to our attention - take a peek at what she's created using this week's color palette - she's an ongoing member of "The Color Room" design team. Isn't this spectacular? Look at her adorable spiral flowers made from our Paper Doll collection! We think they're insatiably cute!!
Another one of our blog contributors had this to share at "The Color Room", miss Lucy Edson. Lucy did double duty with her layout. It's also part of an ongoing video tutorial over at Ella Publishing's blog, a popular online scrapbooking ezine. Find it here.
While at the Color Room, we found a few more layouts done up using a couple of our collections, including Pink Plum & Paper Doll..again, another round of gorgeous layouts - thanks ladies for sharing your CP love with the world! We couldn't resist sharing!

It's official, Crate Paper is rolling out the red carpet and inviting scrapbookers to take part in their twice a year Design Team call! With three new collections about to debut (oh yes, and you're going to LOVE them..we promise!) in the next month Crate Paper is seeking talented, committed designers to contribute their skills in helping us show off our latest collections. Of course, as with any design team call, there are certain requirements that will need to be taken into consideration to be labeled one of Crate Paper's "CP Girls". We've rounded up the requirements and listed them below for you to review. We'll be counting on all our CP Girls to contribute every month throughout the next six months. We realize that Summer is a busy time for most, so if you think you might not able to fulfill the listed requirements, check back with us a little later on following next years design team call! We'd certainly love to have you though and as always, if interested in trying out for Crate Paper's design team, we suggest simply going for it as we have plenty of spots to fill!! We're seeking a vast variety of designers to join the team including scrapbookers, card makers, paper artists and altered project experts!
Crate Paper Design Team Requirements are as follows:
So, what will you receive as a Crate Paper Design Team Member (CP Girl!)? Well, the new collections are well on their way and we already have plans to ship them to our designers as soon as they arrive at our warehouse! You'll receive all the new collections; pattern papers + embellishments (a few new additions!) . We'll also have available many of our earlier collections if you'd like to work with those as well. We try to provide ample product so that you have more than enough to keep you inspired during your sixth month term...we even encourage you to work them into some of your other non-CP projects. The products are your to keep..always.
Remember the three questions we posted yesterday? Now that your familiar with all the design team details, and answered "yes" to at least two of three questions from yesterday, we welcome you to try out for the team!! Send us an email at info@cratepaper.com and in doing so, be sure to include a link to your gallery/blog (either or is fine), your full name, a quick note as to what you'd like to contribute (card maker? scrapbooker? etc.) and any other info you think might be helpful in demonstrating your talents!
Best of luck to all applicants! We look forward to reviewing your submissions - we'll announce the team in a week or so here on the Crate Paper blog!

We have really exciting news to share with you guys today!! Within a few short weeks, we're going to begin debuting CP's newest collections that will premier at the upcoming Summer CHA 2010 Convention - right here on our blog!! Before we do so though, we have a mighty BIG goal of finding lots of creative folks to join our Crate Paper Design Team! YES, we're finally officializing our design team and seeking interested designers whom love all things Crate Paper related!! Are you someone whom can't get enough of our contemporary, quirky collections? Have you been following Crate Paper since it's very beginning when Hampton and Kate first debuted (our first official releases!)? Do you visit our blog on a regular basis to find out what it is we're up to? Well, if you answered yes to at least two of the above three questions, we'd love to have you try out for the team!! Of course, you'll have to wait 'til tomorrow to find out all the latest design team details...this is when the official design team call starts! Think you might want to try out for the team and become a "CP Girl"? Join us tomorrow to find out how! Make sure to mark your calendars!!
Speaking of which, we've received numerous submissions from our blog contribution team these last couple of weeks. We're still well behind on sharing them with you, so if you take a peek below, you'll find an assortment of phenomenal projects from our contribution team! Here's what they've been up to with their Crate Paper collections:
Kaori, our international blog contributor from Japan, concocted this gorgeous layout using are super cute "Paper Doll" collection. Kaori is one of those designers that is always thinking "outside the box" - we love how she thought to use this collection to tell the story of the relationship between her adorable lil' boy and precious puppy.
Making one's own embellishments can sometimes be a great way to use up extra stickers, chipboard pieces, die-cuts and other small items. Shawna Webster created her own unique stick pin to include on this layout. If you look closely, you'll see it on the lower, left portion of her page - it's sits just above the pink felt flower with the green leaf. To make the pin, Shawna glued a flower to the back of a stick pin, glued a button on top of it and then added ribbon to mimic the appearance of leaves. This kind of thing could easily be done with some of our chipboard flowers and label stickers! Make one's own stickpins - a completely original idea..at least we think so anyway.
Ohhh Larissa - this is so lovely and so very you! Larissa recently submitted her monochromatic layout to a Brazilian e-zine and lo & behold, it was published! Yahh! Our dear brook collection found it's way half-way across the world and for good reason - isn't this layout astounding?! Look at all them lively layers and textures. Below are a few close-up images of layout.
And one more project from Larissa we couldn't resist posting today...
We've never seen Crate Paper pattern paper sculpted like this before!! After a recent trip to France and having taken an amazing balloon ride over the Loire Valley while there, Larissa arrived back home and was inspired to craft her very own hot air balloon with both our Pink Plum and Paper Doll collections. She utilized a heavy cardstock template for creating her balloon from this location.
We hope you've enjoyed the projects as much as we have today..we'd like to cordially thank all our blog contributors for their devoted commitment to CP and for always inspiring us with their thoughtful, beautiful creations!! Some of them will continue on as design team members, which means they'll be with us another six months!! We'll share their names with you upon announcing the new team :)

We simply couldn't help ourselves this time around. Even though we premiered a guest designer to you early last week, we brought yet another one today. We happened upon Amy's BEAUTIFUL photography and cards a month or so ago at the Two Peas in a Bucket gallery and because we know that so many of you here are card makers and often visit our blog to find crafty ways to include our products on your card making projects, we thought Amy's creations would be an instant success with you guys! To our surprise, cause we really had no idea how many cards she would send us, Amy went all out! She's put together a whole series of cards to inspire us! She's also still working on a few other items, including a mini album using our Brook line and a super cute accordion album from Martha Stewart...um, really?! WoW! We simply can't thank you enough Amy! We'll premier the accordion album a lil' later on. For now, it's all about cards..and as an unexpected addition, Amy's also made some tags! Yah! We're seriously happy over here as we hadn't of expected so many beautiful creations to come our way - take a peek at them below!!
About :: Amy Heller
My Professional Background is as a graphic designer and brand developer. For the last several years I have been a SAHM to two outrageously wonderful kids, ages 7 and 3. I have been married to my husband/best friend for the last 10 years. My passions in life have been my occupations - creativity and parenting. This, plus my love of photography, have proven a wonderful recipe for my scrapbooking. My kids are the main source of inspiration for my work and are the primary subjects of my layouts. In 2009, I also developed a fondness with card making - a new and fun creative outlet for my leftover creativity!
Crate Paper :: Questionnaire
When did you begin your creative journey with scrapbooking and how did you get started in the hobby?
I was introduced to scrapbooking in 2004 when I was invited to a Close to My Heart weekly crop while my husband was in grad school. Our little girl was 2 years old and i have recently become a SAHM. By trade I was a graphic designer, so I was excited to have a creative outlet as well as a way to document our growing family. I took a couple years off around the time our son was born and when he was 2, I was excited to jump back into scrapbooking again. I didn't start making cards until last year when I started my blog and found card challenges online. I had no idea there was an entire paper crafting world at my fingertips!
If you were to describe your scrapbook style (or cardmaking style) in five words or less, what would they be?
(What I strive to be is) fresh, creative, whimsical, quirky and stylish.
What inspires you to create? What are your primary sources of inspiration?
Patterned papers and pictures of my kids. Sometimes it's the paper that sparks an idea, and sometimes it's a really great photo that I have. If I'm stumped, I go searching through Flickr, Etsy, or my favorite blogs. Since I am relatively new to blogging (just under a year), I'm STILL finding new sources of inspiration online! There are so many great resources! One that I'd love to utilize is Tumblr - but I can't for the life of me figure out how to use it! LOL! Any suggestions?
Where do you do most of your scrapbooking? What time of day are you most creative?
I currently have a dedicated space in our finished basement. It has 2 large full sized windows, so I get plenty of natural light, but it is still subterranean and I'm looking forward to having a full studio someday - on the first floor! LOL. I am DEFINITELY NOT a nighttime crafter. I am a daytime kinda girl - which can be difficult with two small kids! Needless to say, I'm very excited for this upcoming fall when both the kids are in school four and five days a week!! This will give me amply time to create! Luckily I have a super supportive husband that gives me all the time I need on the weekends to craft!
What is your current favorite scrapbooking (card making) technique and why? What scrapbook techniques have you enjoyed previously and of those, which do you still use?
My very favorite technique I can't use right now :( - it's the zig zag stitch on my sewing machine! My $99 machine just isn't cutting it and is on the fritz! LOL! So I'm in the market to get a better machine so I can zig zag to my heart's content! I love using fiber - sewing or ribbon (grosgrain) to add texture to my cards and layouts. I also love using tone on tone to add dimension and texture.
I used to ink distress everything (on all my layouts) and I sanded a lot as well. I do love these techniques, and I do ink distress still, just not as often. I guess I'm still on an adventure to find new ways of creating "my style". For instance, I have recently purchased about 6 bottles of ink mists that I have yet to use but would love to learn!
What is your favorite Crate Paper scrapbook collection of all time?
The Brook Collection is my all time favorite - it has all of my favorite colors! I LOVE the watery and quirky feel to it! But I also love Lillian, Prudence, Lemon Grass, Pink Plum and Paper Doll - see, it's just too hard to choose!!

Thank you again Amy! We're still smiling - love what you've done!! We're certain the album be just as spectacular as the cards..again, we'll post the album as soon as it arrives in our inbox!
We're quietly pre-arranging plans for our upcoming design team call here at Crate Paper. We've scheduled the big event for this Thursday, so if you're either a scrapbooker, card maker, altered artist or general crafter whom loves everything Crate Paper related, please visit our blog in a few short days to find out how to try out for the team! We'll be back on Wednesday with another Crate Paper update!

If there was ever a designer as passionate about all things vintage, it would have to be dear, sweet Amanda Johnson. Her simple, yet engaging scrapbook style is a reflection of this very passion that has generated a following of many from the scrapbook community. All one has to do is visit her blog to see why it is we asked her to be here today...she's worked up a few layouts using our Brook collection. She's also put together a photo series of her studio space to coincide with our questionnaire (a convenient, fun way for us to learn more about our guest designers!). The space is quite remarkable, so be sure to review the images before you leave. We think you might be inspired to redo your space after seeing where Amanda makes her lovely, crafty creations! Think "Decor 8" :) Yes, it's that cool! Run and take a peek..and then leave a comment letting Amanda know that it's been great having her here. Thanks Amanda for contributing as today's guest designer!
When did you begin your creative journey with scrapbooking and how did you get started in the hobby?
I Started scrapbooking in high school when I started receiving paychecks. Ah, disposable income...After picking up my Chick-fil-A paycheck, I was at Walmart and spied a scrapbooking "kit" in the craft section. Believe or not, that was how I got my start. :)
If you were to describe your scrapbook style in five words or less, what would they be?
Cheery, relaxed, simple, vintage and textural.
What inspires you to create? What are your primary sources of inspiration?
I feel inspired to create only after I force myself to sit down and start creating. But, I do love looking at collage artists (notpaper.net is a favorite source! I also love "Mint" - another design blog) and that usually makes me want to sit down with a pile of vintage paper scraps.
Where do you do most of your scrapbooking? What time of day are you most creative?
I have a table next to my brother's twin saw-horse leg Ikea table. It's not nearly large enough, and it's always covered in paper. His is always clean and minimalist. It warrants quite a chuckle when I take the time to notice the juxtaposition. And usually in the evening, after I'm relaxed, is when I like to be creative.
What is your current favorite scrapbooking technique and why? What scrapbook techniques have you enjoyed previously and of those, which do you still use?
I love square geometric shapes, and usually soften it up with machine sewing. In fact, if I don't stitch on a page, it just doesn't seem complete to me! I also love "free trimming", as I call it. If I need a piece of paper trimmed, I generally take my exacto blade to it and embrace the uneven edge.
What is your favorite Crate Paper Scrapbook Collection of all time?
Difficult question! Right now, I love the Prudence and Cottage collections, but I can remember when I bought three of the "Style" paper designs from Crate Avenue collection. That might not seem like a lot to some people, but I'm not the hoarding type, so it was quite extraordinary for me!
Here's a look at Amanda's Studio Space that was mentioned a short while ago:
And finally, the three layouts from Amanda using our Brook collection:
Thank you again Amanda! Believe or not, we have another guest designer debuting next week. We brought on an extra this month for some additional inspiration - we won't disclose the name of our upcoming guest designer just yet, but she's a *uber* talented card maker. We found her at Two Peas in a Bucket and have already posted a couple of her super cute creations here..she'll be with us next Monday! And for more exciting news, one of our blog contributors is working up a new tutorial for you this week. We have it tentatively scheduled to debut this Thursday! We welcome you to join us to learn how to create Lucy Edson's Paper Collage Board! For a quick look at the board, click here..we shared it with you last week. Lucy has kindly offered to show us how to recreate the board - it should be a good one!
